NRCC targeting Spratt but not Kissell?

In what it calls the "first wave" of its fall plan to take back the House, the National Republican Congressional Committee today released the 40 districts where it has reserved $22 million of air time.

South Carolina's 5th District is on the list. North Carolina's 8th is not.

Democratic U.S. Rep. John Spratt of York faces Republican Mick Mulvaney of Lancaster County in what's expected to be a hard-fought battle.

Democratic incumbent Larry Kissell, whose 8th District stretches from Charlotte to Fayetteville, faces Republican Harold Johnson.

"I'm not concerned about that," Johnson said today. "We had an excellent day of fundraising. We had a very good week last week. We're moving forward ... I know this is a very close race."

Last month the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reserved $871,000 in airtime on Charlotte stations for Spratt and Kissell. It was part of $7.7 million in TV time reservations the campaign group has made on behalf of Democratic House incumbents. The DCCC has reserved an additional $290,000 in S.C. markets for Spratt.

I'm not really surprised. Kissell has done a good job. He may be one of the only Democrats still standing after the wave.

Not so fast. Kissell is still a liberal Democrat who is controlled by Nancy Pelosi. Will that be popular among voters in November? I'd say this one is still much closer than you think.

"I'm not concerned about that," Johnson said today.

Says the 70 year old "young gun" wanna be. What a joke the NCGOP and NRCC played on themselves.

You've got to be kidding me. Kissel voted against the party on Healthcare Reform, Climate Change, and mortgage cram down to name a few. I wish she could control him! He needs to be controlled. He has voted against President Obama who he has to thank for even being in Congress.

I guess we are just "kidding you" anonymous. See, there's just something about RINO carpetbaggers from somewhere else. Any idea what that is from your seat in the NRCC? We really don't care what you think.

Spratt's campaign so far is half-hearted, which is unfortunate because he's done a superb job for his district and for the military in South Carolina in particular. Over 100 million bucks in completely justifiable infrastructure improvements support its many missions and ensure it is likely to survive upcoming force cuts by being an F-35 beddown location. Those efforts are among the reasons the National Guard Asociation of South Carolina contributed to his campaign.

ML, don't even try.

Anonymous, you are correct. Pelosi does not control Spratt or Kissell, she dominates them. Evident in that Spratt and Kissell vote with Pelosi 90% of the time. I would hate to be either of them boys in November.

It's not about personal ideology folks, it demographics of the districts in question. Kissel's the more likely winner in the 8th because the district has a much more significant number of registered democrats and traditionally ahs been democratis (the hayes decade notwithstanding). Now if the R's will the NC General Assembly and redreaw the districts for 2012, Kissell can say good bye then, but for 2010, he's pretty darn safe at the moment. As for Spratt, he is still widely popular in his district and will likely hold on to it until he retires. Once he retires though, hello red. As for wither Kissell or Spratt being in pelosi's pocket, think again. Neither is a screaming leftist liberal. But then again, in today's climate, even Atilla the Hun would be considered a screaming leftist liberal compared to various tea partiers, etc.

You're right, 90% of the time with Nancy Pelosi make Spratt and Kissell moderates. You're dead wrong though otherwise. Forget demographics this time round smart guy. The voters are very angry and Kissell and Spratt are very nervous. Angry voters + incumbent democrats = unemployed congressmen. These races a much closer than you want to think.

sorry dude, both races are still toss ups for now

Kissell wins again. Called it. Back to broadcasting to your garden and grandkids in IREDELL COUNTY for you Big Lie.

don't count your democrats before they hatch

You lost this one on filing day. What part of Harold Johnson going in debt just to lose anyway do you people not get? When the NRCC gives you the middle finger, it's over. Bye.

NRCC calls it for Kissell, picks up their balls and goes back to DC.

Did they not?

"As for Spratt, he is still widely popular in his district and will likely hold on to it until he retires."

Here's one reason why. Don't take my word for it, take his:

"Spratt is a friend of the Sumter-Shaw community

Rep. John Spratt is recognized for his very important support for the Air Force mission at Shaw Air Force Base over the past 20-plus years. He has given his support by advocating for the Shaw and U.S. Air Force mission. He as maintained a very close relationship with the Sumter community and the Shaw leadership regarding the mission requirements. He has given continuous support for base infrastructure requirements and for the current Headquarters 9th Air Force and U.S. AFCENT realignment. Spratt has been a major supporter for Shaw's needs, especially during the five BRAC activities from 1991 to 2010. His support during the 2005 BRAC is especially significant. In addition, he is a strong supporter for the assignment of Headquarters 3rd Army/U.S. ARCENT to Shaw Air Force Base. Rep. John Spratt was and is a friend of the Sumter-Shaw community.
