McCrory: A 2012 frontrunner for governor?

Since leaving the Charlotte mayor's office this month, Republican Pat McCrory has been coy about his political future. A new survey by Raleigh's Public Policy Polling may offer him some encouragement.

PPP's Tom Jensen says a year after running for governor, McCrory's has favorability ratings higher than other prospective GOP candidates -- and higher than Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue's 27 percent approval. That could serve McCrory well if he decides to run for Congress, particularly in a GOP-friendly district. But, Jensen adds:

It's a little murkier in terms of a future Gubernatorial run. A 42% favorability
rating with GOP voters would certainly start him out in a better position than
any other potential 2012 Republican hopeful but the numbers don't exactly scream
invincibility. McCrory would likely want the primary field cleared for him if he
was going to take another shot at Governor. Still a 40/18 favorability ratio
with independents is impressive, and 21% of Democrats holding a positive opinion
of him isn't bad either. It seems likely that if Perdue's numbers remain where
they are McCrory would start out the favorite against her in a 2012 rematch.

McCrory shouldn't get too confident. Jensen says almost half of N.C. voters appear to have forgotten him. Forty-five percent said they didn't know enough about him to have an opinion?

Frontrunner for Governor? You have got to be kidding! If you base your opinion on no track record on the issues involved with the office you are running for, I guess you can appeal to a know-nothing crowd. This bought-and-paid-for doll of Duke Energy has NOTHING to offer this state in the new age of Green Power.

Frontrunner? Wasn't he the frontrunner in 2008? Isn't he a Charlotte elected politician? You know the ones elected in Charlotte, SC, but very rarely elected for NC.

What did he do for Charlotte (which is why he's not an elected official in NC)? Whitewater Center? A failure; NASCAR Museum? Remains to be seen? Economy? A basic 1-trick pony like Detroit, Vegas and Orlando under his watch; Got the CIAA? A 1 week affair of 52weeks; Hornets? Gone; Bobcats? Not supported with an arena hardly used with a stadium used 10 times per year.

All on his watch. McCrory, stay in Charlotte, SC where they elect you. NC didn't and doesn't.

Run Pat! We need to get that nutball out of there!

Jim, obviously you're really bored if you're writing about the 2012 governor's race (for some perspective, ask yourself how many people - other than Dell executives of course - could pick Kay Hagan out of a lineup back in 2005).

Here's a suggestion - ask Jennifer Roberts why she hasn't fired Harry Jones and Parks Helms yet. And don't stop asking until you get a viable answer.

Please run, Pat. Your administration was the model for decorum and honesty when compared to county government and state government. Hopefully, enough of the voters around the state have caught on to the corruption of the party that's been in charge forever and know that only hope for North Carolina is a change in parties in charge.

Poster @ 12/21/2009 05:16:00 PM: Obviously you aren't paying attention to what Bev Perdue is doing (rather not doing). It's time NC elects someone from Charlotte and not these Eastern NC nimrods. It's the only way Raleigh pays attention to us. Otherwise, you will still see things like 485 not completed. I'll take Time Warner Arena, Whitewater Center, Nascar Hall, etc any day of the week if means we don't have the Bev Purdue's of the world running (ruining) everything west of Raleigh.

How about putting a Negro in The Governors Mansion.

Purdue and Obama have three more freakin yrs to go. Thats a hell of a long time. This is still only 2009.

McCrory would be destroyed if he lost back to back elections and lately every single NC gov has been in office 2 full terms anyway and no way the 1st female gov in NC will not be there 2 terms and that goes for the 1st black prez in DC.

The author of this article appears to be of the opinion that a Mayor who disregarded a vote in wartime (the rejected 6-5-01 Arena Referendum) and disrespected the voters by foolishly borrowing money to build the unwanted Bobcats Arena could actually stand a chance to win a statewide election.

Not likely. Political suicide is political suicide, and that's what McCrory committed when he flipped the bird to the 58,000 voters who stood in line and rejected the Arena Referendum in 2001.

Now we're flipping HIM the bird.

Governor when? In 2012? Wow! Why don't you write about something that concerns readers right now? You know like why does Harry Jones still work for the city.

I haven't read one of your blogs that makes sense.

NO!!! Why give us the same bad choices that we had for the last governor election? More choices please!!!

McCrory needs to go away so public servants like myself can continue the healing process after years of disrespect and theft of our salaries by his administration. Gov't workers stood up and prevented his election last time, and we will do it again. I DO NOT like Ms. Perdue either (way too Liberal) but McCrory is NOT the answer.

do something greater for the state and refuse to elect either demopublican in favor of an UNaffiliated or Libertarian candidate!

Michael Munger 2012! He is BY FAR more of a Constitutionalist than McCrory who is democrat
'programmed' in spite of the R.

OUTLAW democrats AND republicans so the PEOPLE can TAKE BACK their country!

Patty McCrary and that G.D. Billy James should move to a private island together. Two of a kind. Anti-gay hatemongering George Bushy lovers.

Hopefully Bev Purdue will crush Pat's bloody dreams again in 2012. That's all we need is another right wing Ballantyne dweller trying to speak for people they would never even condescend to speak to, unless it's for a stinking vote. Makes me nauseous.

Perdue and Obama will have much more than three years, you sill trashy fool. Obama will be re-elected without a doubt. You republicans can't tell enough Glen Beck ridden lies to stop it either. God bless President Obama.
