The Black Caucus vs. the Counter Caucus

When voters go to the polls in Mecklenburg's predominantly African American precincts tomorrow, they'll meet volunteers handing out some of the 28,000 flyers with the endorsements of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Black Political Caucus.

And they'll also get a flyer endorsing other candidates -- most of whom were not endorsed by the caucus.

Helping lead what might be called the counter-caucus is state Rep. Beverly Earle. Though she was endorsed by the caucus, she's not happy that some friends and colleagues were not. So she'll be promoting a slate urging the election of fellow Democrats, state Rep. Becky Carney, Sen. Malcolm Graham, Sheriff Chipp Bailey and House challenger Rodney Moore.

"I support my colleagues," Earle said.

So why support Moore, who's running against another one of Earle's colleagues, Rep. Nick Mackey?

"I support most of my colleagues," she said. "Why should I support him if he's putting somebody out there to run against me?"

Earle believe Mackey is behind the candidacy of Rocky Bailey, who's challenging her in the primary. Mackey has denied it.

Caucus chair Gloria Rembert said she'd heard of the counter-slate. She acknowledged that there has been more blowback over this year's endorsements than ever before.

Said Rembert: "You and I will both know tomorrow what the voters say.”

It sure would be nice if both the Black Political Caucus and Beverly Earle thought highly enough of the black residents of Charlotte to let them choose THEIR OWN candidates without condescending "endorsement sheets". Ms. Earle, you're not the only black person in Charlotte with a brain. In fact, this stunt puts you below the 50th percentile in that area.

This is where the community activists and church leaders come into play as a lot of the voters in those districts who will be driven to the polls tomorrow have no idea who the candidates are, the responsibilities of the office or the qualifications needed for the job. They basically get taken advantage of by voting for the list they are given so that a few leaders in their community can reep more spoils. Sadly they get taken advantage of by the very people who are claiming to be working in their best interest. Need evidence, look at Mackey as your example.

African Americans have been used by the democrats for years through scare tactics and ugly politics. Some of them have tried to create a chasm in the party thinking they are smart enough to run local government. They will not learn from their experiences from Detroit, Chicago, and New Orleans. Harry Jones has this county headed down the tubes at an accelerated rate with his protection of DSS. Hopefully the split in the democratic party willbe large enough the independents will side with the Republicans and get conservatives back in power.

How would you form an alternative caucus in Mecklenburg County which believes in smaller government, elimination of fraud in DSS, FRL, enforcement of immigration laws, etc.?

Thank you Mr. Morril for an accurate report.
P.S. Mackey is an opportunistic moron.

8:25 PM post is part of the whole problem. Making racist comments on generalizing a racial group shows nothing but utter ignorance! Understand that all groups park in a handicap spot with good reason. Get over the anger that your Commander in Chief is BLACK.

Alvin, what good reason is there to park in a handicapped spot? Black or not, handicapped spots should only be used by handicapped individuals.

"black caucus"

when black people really want "social equality" they will stop using the designation "black", and stop voting the black ticket, or "Charlotte-Mecklenburg Black Political Caucus".

jinwright, simpson, mayor berry...blah blah blah...

I find many of these comments quite interesting, and let me tell you why. Many of you will talk about Nick Mackey, but you refuse to deal with Bill James. You say the Democrats are taking advantage of the Black vote simply because you wish they would vote Republican, yet the Republicans try everything they can to keep Blacks down. You hate the fact that the Black Caucus can put out a voter guide. but you will take one from your conservative church. Ok! Tell me how you think it's always different, because that is what I always heard. If you think this is all wrong, stop doing what you criticize others for doing and see what the results will be.

As inept and ignorant as Earle is, I applaud her for going up against the Caucus

Sorry folks, but after all the fiasco and BS with Harry Jones, Warren Turner, Vilma Leakes 9 a huge joke) etc...now WAY would I vote for any black candidates! I am tired of the "entitlement" attitude and when they break the law it should be over looked? Or when they hire all their family members/friends without making a position public that is JUST WRONG! Taking a bonus when your dept has $$ missing & CMS cutting back is WAY wrong! That could be one teachers salary! NO MORE!

I voted for Foxx and Obama, Foxx has not done too much in my opinion for anyone and Obama DID at least get the Healthcare bill passed! But that after all I have seen these last 2 years NOW WAY!

I have actually changed my party to Unaffiliated so I can vote the way I want and NOT put another "pick me I'm great, forget all my baggage" in office!

I am tired of the corruption, back slapping ! Corruption is no longer illegal just politically correct! IT IS WRONG!

THIS attitude has GOT to stop!

Quotes from Ms. Earle in a previous article. Maybe she should take a remedial English class:

"Turnout is low in a primary and it depends how many people look at TV tonight or how many people read the paper," Earle said Monday. "Many people don't even know it's an election tomorrow."

I SO agree! Voting for someone just because they are black is SO wrong! BUT it happens MUCH MORE than you know!

If a white perosn did this they would be called racist...why is it not the same for black's?

Of course the alws and rules are different for blacks, they have more advatanges than whites and STILL use "racist" tactics daily!

If you disagree with a black candidate then you are racist! Forget the fact yo udon;t like their ethics or waht they stand for!

Per fect example: Nick Mackey...need I say more? and HE is head of the Black Caucus what a JOKE!

Couldn't agree with you more about Bill James, he is an idiot and a racist! BUT nobody is running against him!

But he and Nick Mackey are two totally different scenarios! Nick Mackey has a LOT of legal issues and baggage, where Bill James is just a loud mouth, but has NO legal baggage!! Yet Mackey keeps getting re-elected???? That is scary!

Shouldn't they be voting for the best person, not the black person? I go by what they say and do, not by what they look like. If everyone did that, there would be less corruption. Hold our elected officials accountable! WHO CARES IF THEY'RE BLACK. Do your research, or please, don't vote at all.

Note that the comments are closed on the story about Mackey losing his law license... wouldn't want anyone to say anything bad about him, would we?

Whites are not allowed to have anything called white, the blacks would yell discrimmination in a heart beat! Yet, they can do what they want and it is OK? Such fair laws we have, huh?

I for one am sick of all the reverse discrimmination...blacks get hired NOT because they are qualified but simply because they are black, what a joke!

Anonymous said...

I find it ironic that the majority of blacks want inclusion, then do their darnedest to ensure they receive special treatment, otherwise the race card is thrown out and anyone who is white, runs for cover.

I pray that one day MLK's ideology of judging a person based on their CHARACTER and NOT the color of their skin will come true. The black community has so much to gain from their past yet cling to racists like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for leadership.

Bev Earle shows up what, 2 or three times a legislative session? The rest of the time she calls in sick, "'cause her back be hurtin'", or her, "feets be swole", or " she got the high blood and the sugar", or "I'm tired all the time", or "my arthur-rightus be so bad".

The Black Caucus Lost Everything Tonight. They and Nick Mackey are history ! Done , Finished !

Anonymous said...

Charlotte's Black Caucus has lost all credibility in my opinion. When you endorse candidates based on affiliations and manipulative tactics and not merit or qualifications then you're left with nothing but a useless endorsement. Of course there is blowback Ms. Rembert because you allowed this to take place. Just look at how your endorsements fared.

Anything with the word "white" on it automatically brands you a kkk white supremist for eternity.

Whites are required to feel guilty about bringing slaves from the jungles 400 yrs ago. LOL. Where they be today otherwise?
Now if they could only invent a time machine and go back 400 yrs to outlaw slavery the problem would be solved.

Anonymous said...

The only way the black caucus can prove its recommendations are not racist and based upon merit is to endorse a qualified person of another race. Barring that, their recommendations are by definition based on race.

I agree with most of these comments. I do want to let you know that there will be a fresh, new face on the ballot in November. Her name is Rebecca Steen. She cares about people, regardless of their race. She’s out meeting people in her district every week so chances are she’ll be knocking on your door. Once you meet her, you’ll see what I mean. She’s genuine and she cares about what’s in the best interest of the people, not her own personal agenda like Ms. Earle. I’m a democrat myself but I’ll be joining thousands of people and voting for her in November.

I moved to NC four years ago. I just found out today, by accident, that the Black Caucus exist within the NC General Assembly.

Today, President Obama made a speech. He said, "America want to move forward, not backward." I am very concerned about the Black Caucus within the General Assembly, because I feel this group is not moving forward. Why is their goal for black youth only in North Carolina? How does this group feel in relation to the words of President Obama. He wants college education for ALL American youth accomplished by 2020

This can't have effect in actual fact, that's exactly what I believe.
