Fact-checking a Tea Party group

A blog posted on the Web site of the Fayetteville-based "We The People of the Sandhills" carries this headline: "HAROLD JOHNSON--TAX CHEAT AND NON-RESIDENT RUNNING FOR 8TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT SEAT."

Blogger Michael Hyers posted federal court documents showing a judgment against Johnson for failing to pay federal taxes. I got two e-mails from people who passed the documents along.

One small problem -- it's the wrong Harold Johnson.

A check by our researcher Marion Paynter showed that the tax-owing Harold Johnson lives in Pennsylvania, not North Carolina. He's not the Harold Johnson running for Congress in the 8th District.

It is true that Pennsylvania is outside the district.

Hyers, who appears to have an unlisted number, could not be reached.

"If anybody has questions they want me to answer, before looking foolish writing stuff, give me a call," Johnson says.

Hyers' blog wasn't the only questionable post on the WTP Sandhills site.

A Sunday post announcing its endorsements in congressional races -- including that of Johnson rival Tim D'Annunzio -- described the group as a "non-partisan group of American Patriots" that includes "such notable members" as Cumberland County GOP Chair Suzanne Rucker.

Rucker says she's not even aware she's a "member" of the group and, as party chair, isn't endorsing anyone.

"This is the kind of group I fear that can give a bad name to the Tea Party movement," she said. "The misuse of my name ... is an example of the bad things that can happen."

D'Annunzio, by the way, will rack up his second endorsement in as many days from a Tea Party group. Concord-based "We The People NC" plans to announce its endorsement tonight.

Ric Starnes, spokesman for We The People NC, said his group based its decision on a straw poll among members following a forum last week.

Tea Partiers using lies and distortions to promote their views???

How shocking!!

we gone throw tea party folks in jale.

Michael Hyers you can bet is on the Tim D'Annunzio payroll.

Money vs truth?

Truth wins every time!

The label "Tea Party" is not expositive. As Red Neckerson from Okeechobee use to say, "I can call my pole barn a high-risin' office building with an elevating machine, but that don't make it one."

It will be interesting to see how vicious a run-off this would be.

Looks like D'Annunzio's fact checker is AWOL. "The staffer don't fall far from the candidate."

Anonymous said...

If I was an idiot like Michael Hyers my phone number would be unlisted too. Bet the only person that can reach him is D'Annunzio.

Anonymous said...

I hope the Johnson campaign throws everything at that idiot's blatant attempt to distort the facts. Typical eastern politics.

Get ready Johnson campaign,
"Harold Johnson/opposition research" is probably a huge line item on D'Annunzio's campaign books. A lot of good it did them, the wrong Harold Johnson in the wrong state. 4 months of exhaustive research and that is the best they can do. I bet that D'Annunzio staffer got fired today.

I can see the D'Annunzio gang tonight huddled in their little rat's nest hatching their next scheme to attack Mr. Johnson. All that good money paid to D'Annunzio staffers for bad ideas. The D'Annunzio press releases will go something like this over the next 2weeks. Harold Johnson will first be blamed by D'Annunzio for the Icelandic volcanic activity. When that fails to stick D'Annunzio will claim he has proof that Johnson was soley responsible for our unusually cold winter. When asked to elaborate D'Annunzio declines but will offer the D'Annunzio family electric bill as proof. Finally, the mother of all false accusations. D'Annunzio will claim that Harold Johnson has not 1 but 2 overdue library books in his possession. D'Annunzio knows this is a hot button issue among 8th District librarians. If that does not work he'll demand that Harold withdraw from the race and support Tim D'Annunzio for Congress.

yep, bull's eye has been painted squarely on johnson's back by d'annunzio. think i'd have to say to d'annunzio, "give it your best shot dude. we know harold, we take care of our own. the d'annunzio brand of politics does not play here. take your slimy campaign and head on back down east boy, you ain't from around these parts."

God bless Marion Paynter.

The "Tea Party" will be lucky if their vote even counts anymore. We are in charge now and we won't let them gain any power. We agree w/ Mao, remember?

Big Guy, go ahead and bury D'Annunzio and wrap this thing up. All it will take is one 30 second commercial. Let me walk you through it.

D'Annunzio being led to the Brig in handcuffs for being AWOL. Show D'Annunzio later as a CONVICT in the black and white striped prison uniform. Then a guy smoking marijuana in an army uniform while packing parachutes for his buddies. Then D'Annunzio holding drug test paperwork with his name on it that says "POSITIVE" in big red letters...then holding army discharge documents and Military Police escorting D'Annunzio to the bus station with a one way ticket home. Now fast forward to an older, heavier D'Annunzio drinking, driving and crashing. He is arrested and charged with DUI. Next is the assualt and trespassing. The last 10 seconds is D'Annunzio's mug shot, it would destroy him like it did OJ Simpson. Narrator would ask, "Congressman D'Annunzio? I think not." The Doors "The End" would be playing softly in the background.

I could even provide all the guys to play all the parts. At least think about it.

I have concluded that D'Annunzio is a coward. He hides first behind religion, then the Constitution and now the Tea Party. Be careful Tea Party, you do not want to become the D'Annunzio Party.

D'Annunzio is bad for the Republican party and the 8th district.

Question, since when does Tea Party attack Republican primary candidates?

Answer, they don't.

Tim D'Annunzio is behind this stunt. Do you really think a guy without a telephone, Michael Hyers of some Tea Party group, could do necessary research and find a court document in Pennsylvania? The guy was probably one of D'Annunzio's old neighbors.

D'Annunzio paid someone to find the document and instructed Hyer and his group to post it, distribute it and forward it to Charlotte Observer.

How'd that work out for you D'Annunzio? Better luck tomorrow.

for the record, not all tea party members will be voting for d'annunzio

Anonymous said...

Michael Hyers, LIEberal LIAR blogger is the appropriate description. WHY do democrackkks always have to LIE to deceive?

Anonymous said...

Good to hear that Tea Party, I feel better about your movement now. I did not think all of you in the Tea Party would support D'Annunzio's attack on a good candidate.

Anonymous said...

I was willing to give D'Annunzio a chance but that has changed. I'll be supporting the guy he is attacking. Harold Johnson, in the opinion of D'Annunzio, is obviously the best cnadidate.

Tim D'Annunzio believes in redemption, he is a Christian man.

Johnson campaign, Will Rogers Said:

"When someone lies about you tell the truth about them."

Now get to it.

Congressman Johnson. Has quite a nice ring to it.

Anonymous said...

Get crackin' guys, D'Annunzio picked up at least 35 votes yesterday with all those endorsements.

Anonymous said...

I am digusted by the Sandhills Tea Party and the Cabarrus County Tea Party for supporting a guy with a record a mile long=d'annunzio. They give other Tea Partiers a very bad name. D'Annunzio is a wacko that walks off stage during debates. Is he going to walk away from a debate when Kissel's people start attacking him. D'annunzio may have enough money to BUY his way through the primary but he will get creamed in November by Kissell and the repubs will have screwed up.

Anonymous said...

Slimy D'Annunzio is behind this incorrect and negative campaiging. D'Annunzio is pure evil.

Anonymous said...

I am a DIE HARD republican/conservative but will vote for Kissell if D'Annunzio wins. I would take a liberal democrat over a pycho like D'Annunzio. D'Annunzio will be like that Grayson guy from Florida.

I'm curious, how many non-campaign staff actually read this forum? You don't have to state which campaign you're working for but I'd just like to know if actual undecided voters are reading these and similar comments about the campaign.

Get off Tim's back, and just go to his website www.timdannunzio.com.

Tim D'Annunzio has done nothing wrong. He is a kind gentlemen. He doesnot deserve to be treated like this by the other campaigns and the newspapers. Stop picking on him. He is a holy and Christian man. Please stop prosecuting him.

I smell a slander lawsuit coming.

yes, d'annunzio is pretty angry about all the untrue things that are being said about him

where was dannunzio last night?

Tim apparently had transportation problems. Or so he says. He would have just trailed off with his usual unintelligible answers to questions if he had showed up anyways. Theres no way he is going to win enough votes to avoid a run-off.

Johnson's ad claims in pictures that he has the tea party endorsement. So why do you think the tea party tried to dump him? How about his oponent being the guilty one? Or just some crank? You do a diservice by jumping in with your conclusion. The Charlotte Observer has no creditability left.

Anonymous said...

you're absolutely right, the 8th district tea party endorsement and their 41 votes will likely decide this primary

Anonymous said...

let's set the record straight here. the tea party vote to endorse was very close. not all tea party members will be voting for d'annunzio

Anonymous said...

on www.timdannunzio.com you hear Tim's response to being endorsed by the tea party.

Anonymous said...

vote for huddleston or johnson

d'annunzio has no integrity
jordan has no momentum

johnson and huddleston are only 2 candidates that can defeat kissell

Anonymous said...

Open letter to Tim D'Annunzio:

You are right, we must reunite the Republican party in the 8th Congressional District. Better yet, YOU should work to reunite the Republican party after the primary. D'Annunzio, and D'Annunzio alone, has torn the Republican party apart here. The good news is that D'Annunzio will have plenty of time to work on this after the primary.

tim dannunzio is not angry tim dannunzio is crazy

Love how this anti tea party
whipping post has such incredible longevity on the pandering to liberals only Observer political page.

That is exactly why the tea party even exists.

I think I will became a facebook user and "friend" the tea party folks.

Liberalism died when the IRS became the sole government policing agent of your government mandated health insurance requirements to maintain legal citizen status.

Mike Hyers is no longer a member of WTP of the Sandhills. The information on his blog about Harold Johnson, although came from a reliable source, was not investigated before posting. His refusal to issue a retraction and apology to Johnson, especially after learning the truth, lead to his leaving the group.
Suzanne Rucker is indeed a member of the group. But you cannot expect a RINO to speak truth, can you?

Anonymous said...

If you went on to their website you would PLAINLY see that S.T.Rucker is the one and same Cumberland County GOP Chair. HMMM fact check much?
So what's with Lou and the reasons he stepped down from RLM? Wifey found out that he was making it with a co-worker. You all wanna vote for the "John Edwards of District 8" Go ahead! Your hypocrisy is showing! At least Tim D'Annunzio's indiscretions happened 15 years ago. How bought ole Lou? And what's with Mr. Johnson living in Boone? Driving to the District is NOT a good way to represent either. And buying a condo 4 months ago cause the GOP want him in, doesn't make him a part of the district....
Mr. Morrill you being a "reporter" haven't checked your facts either.

You can bet that Justin Burr is DESPERATE to have Johnson win...you can bet that hate groups like Anyone But Tim D'Annunzio for Congress is filled with liberal loons. But then again you Jim are part of the problem too

Anonymous said...

Jim Morrill, the poster boy of the Charlotte NOT SO Observer liberal hit men!

Anonymous said...

"We the People of the Sandhills" removed that post as soon as it was discovered false. They also issued a formal apology to Harold Johnson for Mike Hyers false allegations. The WTP site speaks of integrity and was very disappointed in the actions of Mike Hyers. I do not believe it was their intentions to smear the Harold Johnson's campaigne (as noted earlier, Mike Hyers is no longer a menber).
