New ads urge minorities to vote -- for Republicans

Minorities have been the Democratic Party's most reliable voters in North Carolina and around the country. Now supporters of Ben Carson are trying to change that.

The National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee is spending $300,000 on ads on radio stations geared to African Americans and Hispanics. It's spending another $230,000 on ads in Louisiana. The ads, which start in most markets today, target Democratic U.S. Sens. Kay Hagan and Mary Landrieu.

The ads seek to persuade minority voters that Republican positions on  energy, abortion and education are more in line with their values than those of Democrats.

"Minority voters for 60 years have only heard what the Republican Party stands for from Democrats, and they haven't been kind descriptions," says Vernon Robinson, a Winston-Salem Republican and  campaign director of the draft Carson committee. "Democrats have been running ads that say Republicans want to kill your mom and your dog."

Robinson says the ads are designed to chip away at support for Hagan, who's in a tight race with Republican Thom Tillis.

"Even minor shifts in minority participation are significant in a close race because Kay Hagan doesn’t have any minority voters to give up,” he says.

Carson has said a Republican takeover of the Senate -- the GOP needs a net gain of 6 seats -- would encourage him to seek the GOP presidential nomination in 2016.

A retired neurosurgeon, Carson is also author of "One Nation," which currently sits atop the New York Times bestseller list.

What a comedian.

Very ironic, given the efforts by Republicans to suppress minority voting here in NC and Nationally.

Ben Carson absolutely needs to run. Ted Cruz, too. The more nuts, the better.

All three previous comments on this article are very representative of the typical Liberal method of debate. If you don't have a rational position, you call names and level allegations.

The reality is that any voting block who weds themselves entirely and without exception to any one political party, make themselves irrelevant.

The only thing Dems really care about with African-Americans is that they show up on election day, NOT what issues matter to them because they already know who they will vote for IF they show up.

Republicans have no reason to care about what African-Americans want on the issues because THEY know that they won't get their vote even if the agree with them on every issue.

This is the personification of disenfranchisment... not being denied a vote, but neither party caring about what you want.

The whole voter ID argument is nonsense since we already have to have photo IDs for so many things that the only possible argument against it is that it will provide proof that voter fraud is a bigger issue than Liberals want to pretend. The reality is, that without voter ID there is NO WAY to know whether fraud is, or isn't happening and any claim otherwise is a bald faced lie.

Vote issues, not party and your vote will ultimately count more.

Why would ANY minority vote for a
Right Wing Republican? The Republican party are not for the poor or middle class. Look at what they have done to North Carolina in such a short time. They may think that minorities are stupid but they are not. All one has to do is listen to the news or read. All my minority friends say they are not Stupid and will never vote for a republican.

You say Democrats are for the middle class? Obamacare raised my premiums 260% from $174 to $450 a month with a $5500 deductible for 1 person. That's almost $11,000 per year before insurance kicks in. How can I afford that on a $50,000 (before taxes) salary? Wait until the delayed employer mandate kicks in that was delay until after the mid terms. Use your name in your post next time.

Neither side cares about anyone only the party. We need more Independent/Unaffiliated politicians

First of all, Thomas, your premiums would have been much more had it not been for the Healthcare Act. Also, a lot of people would never had been covered had it not been for this. This argument that the Healthcare Act is going to ruin your lives is nothing more than Fox News Rhetoric. Also, Republicans had an opportunity to make healthcare affordable and they didn't.

Dear John-There has been less than seven attempts at voter fraud this century. Also, there was more to the Republican bill than ID. Voter Registration areas were moved fifty miles from their original areas, not to mention the fact that voter registration areas in Democratic areas were also closed forcing hundreds to thousands of people to vote in one area. Also, those voter booths will close early regardless of the number of people waiting in line to vote. That was what people were arguing about. You really need to keep up with politics.

Minorities and other people of intelligence need to vote Democrat. You have already seen what has happened to North Carolina with minorities rights to vote. If the Republicans win you will end up with a bunch of stupid laws such as "Stand Your Ground." It will be open season on minorities. What ever rights your grandfathers fought for will be gone in a blink of an eye. If you do not believe me just look at the voting bill that got passed in Norht Carolina.

Open season on minorities? What is that supposed to mean? Anyway, Stand Your Ground saves taxpayer money by having the "thugs" avoid jaoil time, court costs and all that is involved. It's once and done. Anyone who is stupid, would vote Democrat. Like Thomas said, Obamacare is a failure (look at the VA for instance; can't event find the right person to fix that), foreign policy is in the toilet, what else hae I missesd???
