Want to weigh in on Jim Black? Here's how.

Judging from emails, phone calls and online comments, a lot of people have opinions about our story today on the effort to reduce Jim Black's prison sentence or move him closer to home.

Lawyers for the former N.C. House speaker, who is serving five years for corruption in Lewisburg, Pa., have organized a letter-writing campaign to commute his sentence or at least get him moved back to North Carolina. They cite his ailments as well as his wife's recent diagnosis with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

About 150 people have written in support of Black. Not everybody is sympathetic.

"The key piece to remember is that Jim Black had a chance to get a shorter prison sentence," says Bob Hall of Democracy North Carolina, whose research into Black's campaign contributions helped set the stage for his prosecution. "There was a considerable period of time between his conviction and his sentencing when prosecutors sought his cooperation in their investigation of corruption, but he gave them no help....

"So if he wants a reduced prison time now, does that mean he's changed his mind and is ready to tell the truth about the full extent of pay-to-play politics in North Carolina?"

How do you feel about Black's sentence?

atzI feel sorry for the man, his wife's condition and all but he commited a terrible crime against the citizens of North Carolina. I can't agree with comuting his sentance.
What if I were in prison? Would I receive any breaks? Probably not.

Sorry Jim...you showed absolutely no compassion for so many folks while you wielded your power. Now you want forgiveness?? We have yet to hear you say you were guilty or that you are sorry. But, we know you are sorry...you sorry jerk!!

I never really had too much sympathy for Former House Speaker Black because he had to openly live with the consequinces of his criminal actions. Rather than getting an communted sentance, he should arrange for long-distance caregiving for his wife while remaining in jail.

Betty Black has a cleaning lady, just add a nurse, the money taken from the mens bathroom can pay the aide.

His wife Betty Black was always sick in one degree or another, hypocondriac, another tactic to get less time or be closer to home, have his son Jon Black of Black Pest Control who operates his business like his father, washing palms, spraying water and not chemicals or his daughter Debbie Carpenter who her husband owns an eye care center which helped benefit the eye practice not only for speaker black but for also his son-in-law Dr. Matthew Carpenter who practices in matthews, NC. You don't know the 1/2 of what that family has done, speaker needs to rot and betty needs to take her prozac. Her daughter lives walking distance, give me a break, she can help her mother, but there's no helping, she's a very unstable person before speaker went to jail. It's all an act!!!!!

do the crime, do the time pal. You were trusted by the citizens of the state of NC as a proper steward. However, proper steward you were not and you abused the power entrusted to you by the state of NC and its citizens for your own personal financial gain. You are nothing more than a opportunistic theif on a magnified scale or a purse snatcher who uses their size and speed against would be victims. Enjoy your punishment, you earned it...even though you thought you'd get away with it. Thus, making you the worst type of thief.

BLACK PEST CONTROL should be shut down .....funnelin' polical money through the business, JON BLACK has no value on a dollar because it was never his dollar, it was someone elses that he used to buy his MERCEDES, HOUSES, BOATS, TRIPS, BUSINESS, ETC. boycott BLACK PEST CONTROL!! make him suffer like he's made the NC suffer, afterall his speaker jim black has control of that business also.

I would like to say that everyone has done wrong and it is so small minded of anyone to condemn another when we are all guilty of things we are ashamed and regret. I do not care if he is guilty. He says he is not and the rest is his business. Please look inside your own unblemished character ...or is it easier to tear another down?
